Answer:

here is your answer dear:-

1).In optics, the refractive index of a material is a dimensionless number that describes how fast light travels through the material. It is defined as n={\frac {c}{v}}, where c is the speed of light in vacuum and v is the phase velocity of light in the medium.

2) This means that the speed of light in diamond will reduce by a factor of 2.42 as compared to its speed in air. ... In other words, the speed of light in diamond is 1/2.42 times the speed of light in vacuum.

hope it's help you ✌️

It means that the ratio of speed of light in Vacuum or Air with respect to Diamond is 2.42.

Please note that it also means it is the ratio of sine of angle of incidence to the sine of engle of refraction. (sin i/sin r)

Hope it helps.

n < sub > diamond < /sub > ndiamond = 2.42 = v < sub > vacuum/air < /sub > /v < sub > diamond < /sub > vvacuum/air/vdiamond

Please note that Diamond has the highest refractive index. \since\since It is the ratio of same quantities, the constant \sin i/ \sin rsini/sinr is a dimensionless constant with no unit. i.e.,

< sub > 1 < /sub > n < sub > 2 < /sub > = M < sup > 0 < /sup > L < sup > 0 < /sup > T < sup > 0 < /sup > <sub>1</sub>n<sub>2</sub>=M<sup>0</sup>L<sup>0</sup>T<sup>0</sup>
