Answer:

These ions conduct electricity in the solution resulting in the glowing of the bulb. On the other hand, the glucose solution does not dissociate into ions. Therefore, it does not conduct electricity. ... That is why, though alcohols and glucose contain hydrogen, they are not categorised as acids.

Good question

First you should know what is an acid.

ACID➠ Those compounds which release H+ ions in their aqueous solution are termed as acid.

Let's do the activity.

Take solution of HCl , sulfuric acid, glucose and alcohol. All these are hydrogen containing compounds.

Fix two iron nails on a rubber cork and place a cork in a beaker.

Connect the nails to two terminals or 6 V battery through a switch and a bulb.

Pour some dilute HCl solution in beaker and switch on the current.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎

OBSERVATION:

The bulb starts glowing .This shows that HCl solution taken in the breaker conduct electricity. If we repeat this activity by taking Sulfuric acid in place of HCl the bulb will glow again. This shows that sulfuric acid solution also conduct electricity. All the acid solution will conduct electricity.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎

Now Let's take glucose solution in beaker in place of HCl and switch on the bulb. You will notice that the bulb will not glow. This shows that glucose solution doesn't conduct electricity. If we repeat this activity by taking alcohol in place of Glucose bulb will not glow. This shows that alcohol also doesn't conduct electricity.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎

The aqueous solution of an acid conduct electricity due to the presence of charged particles called ions in it. Due to the absence of ions glucose and Alcohol doesn't conduct electricity.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎

CONCLUSION:

From this activity we conclude that the hydrogen containing compounds such as glucose and alcohol are not categorised as acid because they do not dissociate ( or ionise) in water to produce hydrogen ions.

From this activity we can also conclude that all compounds containing hydrogen are not acid.
