A simple sentence consists of only one clause. A compound sentence consists of two or more independent clauses. A complex sentence has at least one independent clause plus at least one dependent clause. A set of words with no independent clause may be an incomplete sentence, also called a sentence fragment.

\underline {\bold{Simple\:Sentence :-}} Those sentences having a subject and only one finite verb are called Simple Sentences.

Finite Verb : Finite verbs are those verbs which shows the complete meaning of a sentence.

Examples of Simple Sentences :-

1. Birds fly in the sky.

2. He went home.

Note ➸ Sometimes, the subject of the sentence remains hidden. In the above sentences, the subjects are hidden. One important thing to note is that :

✪ When there are more than one finite verbs in a sentence, they are either compound or complex sentences.

\underline {\bold{Complex\:Sentences:-}} In Complex sentences, there exists only one principal clause and one or more subordinate clause.

Examples of Complex Sentences :-

1. \bold {I\:know} what his name is.

2. \bold {This\:is\:the\:village} where Atul Chandra was born.

Note ➸ In the above sentences, the parts written in 'bold' are the principal clauses and the others are the subordinate clauses. One important thing to note is that :

✪ Generally, in complex sentences, 'Wh' clause, 'that', 'as' etc are found. So it is easy to identify them.

\underline {\bold {Compound\:Sentences:-}} In Compound Sentences, mote than one principal clauses are found. These clauses are generally joined by coordinating conjunctions such as : and, or, but, else, however, therefore, still, yet, for etc.

Examples of Compound Sentences :

1. The earth is round \bold {and} everybody knows it.

2. He is ill, \bold {still} he will come to the meeting.

The part of a sentence without which the meaning of the sentence can't be expressed are called Principal Clause or Independent clause.

The part of a sentence which is not necessarily required or without which the meaning of the sentence can be explained is called Subordinate or Dependent clause.
