Diwali, Deepavali or Dipavali is Hindu and Jainfestival of lights, which is celebrated every autumn in the northern hemisphere (spring in southern hemisphere). One of the most popular festivals of Hinduism, Diwali symbolises the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance." Light is a metaphor for knowledge and consciousness. During the celebration, temples, homes, shops and office buildings are brightly illuminated. The preparations, and rituals, for the festival typically last five days, with the climax occurring on the third day coinciding with the darkest night of the Hindu lunisolar month Kartika. In the Gregorian calendar, the festival generally falls between mid-October and mid-November.

<b>Mythological

The return of Lord Ram after 14 years of Vanvaas, to Ayodhya, along with Sita and Laxman, which triggered major celebrations in the city, and lighting of 14 diyas.

Another is the killing of Narakusara, by Lord Krishna's consort Satyabhama, just one day before Diwali. So in most places in India, you have Naraka Chaturdasi to commemorate the killing of Narakasura, followed by Diwali where the lamps are lit and crackers burst.

Social

Diwali is associated with Lakshmi the goddess of wealth, prosperity and fortune. In India it falls at the end of Aswayuja or Ashwin month and the start of the Kartika month. This is the time when farmers finish their harvesting, and the seasons transition from fall to winter. So the Laxmi Puja is held on this day, to thank the goddess for the harvest and also praying for a good harvest to come. Merchants also worship to Goddess Laxmi on this date, and account books are closed, and new ones are started. In earlier times, business and trade depended on the agrarian activity, so merchants treated this day, as the closing of an old business cycle and starting a new one. With Laxmi being the goddess of prosperity, many merchants pray on this day, for the success of their trade or business.

Diwali generally falls on Amavasya, the new Moon day, in Hindu calendar, and that is the reason why diyas are light everywhere, to dispel the darkness, and homes are decorated to welcome Goddess Laxmi. More than anything Diwali is an occasion, when people pray for prosperity and fortune. Lakshmi in Hinduism is also regarded as the Divine Shakti that gives energy to 5 elements- Vishnu(Hapiness), Kubera( Wealth), Saraswati( Learning), Gajendra( Vishnu's mount and carrier of wealth) and Indra( opulence and comfort). Lakshmi represent the synergy of these 5 elements, ensuring that each is present in the right quantity.
