Atoms form chemical bonds with other atoms when there's an electrostatic attraction between them. This attraction results from the properties and characteristics of the atoms' outermost electrons, which are known as valence electrons.

Through ionic bonding, an atom of each element will combine with the other to form a molecule, which is more stable since it now has a zero charge. In general, ionic bonding results in a complete transfer of electrons from one atom to another.

There are mainly two ways in which the atoms can combine:

• By sharing the electron density

• By exchanging the electrons in order to form discrete positive and negative ions

The first way of sharing the electron density is also called the covalent bond. Whereas, the second way is also called the ionic bond.

The covalent bond is mainly seen in tetravalent atoms like carbon. However, the ionic bond is formed between a metal and a non-metal by giving and taking of electrons.

Examples of covalent bond: CH2COOH

Examples of ionic bond: NaCl
