let the numbers be x and y

then

x/y =5/6

6x=5y

x=5y/6........(i)

if we subtract

8 from both numbers the ratio becomes 4/5

so,

x-8/y-8=4/5

5(x-8)=4(y-8)

5x-40=4y-32

5x-4y=-32+40

5x-4y=8

from (i)

we put the value of x

we get:

5(5y/6)-4y=8

(25y/6)-4y=8

multiplying 6 on both sides

25y-24y=48

y=48

then

x=5×48/6=40

so the numbers are 40 and 48
