Answer:

Two distinct photosystems.

Explanation:

What is Emerson's enhancement effect?

  • Emerson explained the rate of photosynthesis based on quantum yield.
  • Quantum yield is the amount of O₂ absorbed per quanta light absorbed.
  • Emerson used monochromatic light during his experiment. While going from lower to higher wavelengths he observed a sharp drop when the light of wavelength greater than 680 nm was used. This phenomenon is termed the red drop effect ( as the yield dropped immediately after 680 nm - red light)
  • On further experimentation, he observed that when the light of lower and higher ( than 680 nm) wavelengths was used simultaneously the quanta obtained was much higher than the quanta of their results added.

Example:

Higher(than 680 nm) and lower wavelengths were observed separately.

670 nm = 42 quanta

700 nm = 10 quanta

Higher and lower wavelengths were observed simultaneously.

670 nm+700 nm = 82 quanta

Note:

  • The addition sign above doesn't denote the addition of the individual quanta obtained.
  • This example was only given to explain the above statement.

From this we can conclude that Emerson's effect includes two photo systems.
