I was straggled in a hailstorm last night.Hence I asked this Question after observing one thing .

I saw lightening .After 18s I heard the thundering.Estimate how far from me was the lightening reach the ground?.

  • Speed of Sound in air ,S = 324m/s

we need to calculate the how far from him/her the lighting reach the ground . Obviously we have to calculate the distance covered by sounds in the given condition.

Let the distance covered by the sound is d m .

We know that

• Distance covered = speed of light × time

Substitute the value we get

➺ d = 324×18

➺ d = 5832 m

➺ d = 5832 metres

  • Hence, the lighting was about 5832 metres far from you.
