Inertia is the resistance of any physical object to any change in its velocity. This includes changes to the object's speed, or direction of motion. Thus, an object will continue moving at its current velocity until some force causes its speed or direction to change.

The inertia is of three types:

1. Inertia of rest

2. Inertia of motion

3. Inertia of direction.

Inertia is defined as a property of matter by which it remains at the state of rest or in uniform motion in the same straight line unless acted upon by some external force.

Following are the three types of inertia:

Inertia of Rest

When the resistance is offered by the body to continue in the state of rest unless an external force acts on it.

Inertia of Direction

When the resistance is offered by the body to continue the motion in the same direction unless an external force acts on it.

Inertia of Motion

When the resistance is offered by the body to continue to be in the uniform motion unless an external force acts on it.
