Question -

Verify whether the following are zeros of the polynomial, indicated against them.

a) p(x) = x² - 1, x = 1, - 1

b) p(x) = (x + 1) (x -2), x = -1,2

c) p(x) = x², x = 0

Solution -

a. p(x) = x² - 1

p(1) = (1)² - 1

= 1 - 1

= 0

p(-1) = (-1)² - 1

= 1 - 1

= 0

Therefore, 1 and -1 are zeros of p(x).

b. p(x) = (x+1)(x+2)

p(-1) = (-1 + 1)(-1 - 2)

= 0×(-3)

= 0

p(2) = (2 + 1)(2 - 2)

= (3)×0

= 0

Therefore, -1 and 2 are zeros of p(x).

a. p(x) = x²

p(0) = (0)²

= 0

Therefore, 0 is the zero of p(x).

Hence, Verified!
