What is Speciation?
Speciation is the origin of new species from the existing ones. It is the process of evolution of new species from pre existing species occurring due to accumulation of variation.
List four factors that could lead to speciation. Which of these methods cannot be a major factor in the speciation of a self- pollinating plant species? Give reason to justify your answer.
The factors which can lead to the rise of new species of speciation are :-
♣ Gene flow
♣ Genetic drift
♣ Geographical and reproductive isolation
♣ Natural selection
Among these factors, geographical isolation can not be a major factor in the speciation of a self-pollinating plant species.
★ Since, the plants are self-pollinating, which means that the pollens are transferred from the anther of one flower to the stigma of the same flower or to the stigma of another flower of the same plant, geographical isolation cannot prevent speciation in this case.
★ Such plants do not depend on other plants for its further reproduction to be carried out.
