Heteroatom: In organic chemistry, an atom other than carbon or hydrogen.

Acetamide (shown here) has two heteroatoms: one oxygen atom and one nitrogen atom. The carbon atoms and the hydrogen atoms are not heteroatoms.

Typical heteroatoms are nitrogen (N), oxygen (O), sulfur (S), phosphorus (P), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), and iodine (I), as well as the metals lithium (Li) and magnesium (Mg).
