What is soil erosion? Explain the causes of soil erosion.

Soil Erosion- soil erosion is the removal of topsoil, the fertile layer, by the action of wind and water or due to human activities. Top soil may be carried away by wind or washed away by flowing water due to heavy rains and floods.

Causes of Soil Erosion:-

1. Deforestation is the cutting down of trees on a large scale may be from an orchard or a forest. This leaves behind loose soil exposed to strong winds, floods, heavy rain and over flowing river or surface water.

2. Overgrazing by cattle without allowing time for the recovery of the grass or shoots on shrubs. This leaves behind loose soil.

3. Poor farming methods like excessive use of chemical fertilizers results in reduced humus in the soil and thus reducing the water holding capacity of soil. This results in loosening of soil.

Soil erosion is the displacement of the upper layer of soil; it is a form of soil degradation. This natural process is caused by the dynamic activity of erosive agents, that is, water, ice (glaciers), snow, air (wind), plants, animals, and humans.
