India, a country of multi ethnic, linguistic, sectarian and religious groups is practically a nation of various minorities. Accordingly, after emerging as a “Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, Democratic, Republic” in 1947 it adopted a constitution which granted equal rights to all its citizens without any discrimination. However, in any democracy there is always a danger that the interest of majority may conflict with the interests of minorities. Even so, minority issues are increasingly taking centre stage in Indian politics, whether in the form of separatist movements, demands for increased political representation, or the need to provide protection to its many religions and cultures. Many of these conflicts are yet to be resolved, and the challenge for India will be to put in place processes that enable minority problems to be discussed and resolved for the benefit of the country as a whole with the consensus of the majority, while ensuring the collective survival of the many minority peoples who form an integral part of the country.
