as you know that oxidation state of a neutral compound say CO2 will be
sum of both = 0
i:e oxi state of O + oxidation state of C=0
but oxidation state of an ion will be equal to the whole charge on ion which in this case(SO4(2−)) is -2
so,
oxidation state of S + 4( oxd state of O) = -2
oxidation state of S+ 4(-2) = -2......( each oxygen has -2 oxidation state)
oxidation state of S + (-8) = -2
oxidation state of S = 8 -2
oxidation state of S = +6
