The word monsoon is derived from the Arabic word 'mausim' which means season. It is a periodic wind which plays a vital role in shaping Indian climate.

  • Local winds

  1. El Nino - El Nino is a warm surface ocean current of Peru in South America. It increases the temperature of Pacific waters causing flood and drought in the tropical regions of the world. India also lying in the tropical regions experiences the flood and drought situation due to it's effect.
  2. La Nina - La Nina, a cool ocean current, causes heavier summer monsoon in the south-east parts of Asia. This benefits Indian people and Indian economy that depends on monsoon for agriculture and it's industries.
  3. Mango Showers - In Kerela and western coastal region, the local storms, knows as Mango showers, bring rainfall which have effect on the mango crop, and thus benefit the people.
  4. Nor'westers - Nor'westers are thunderstorms that occur in West Bengal, Bihar and Assam, when humid winds from sea meet hot and dry winds on land. They bring thunder and rain in the north-western parts with forceful wind and rain which causes appreciable fall in temperature and thus relieving the people from scorching heat of summer.

  • In some parts, removal of top soil layer is caused by heavy rain and hence, agricultural productivity suffers.

  • In areas of heavy rainfall, there is luxuriant growth of evergreen vegetation.

  • The impact of monsoon is mostly felt in the agricultural fields as the cropping season entirely depends on the timely arrival and departure of monsoon. If there is no monsoon, or too little rain, or if there is too much rain at a time, there would be a crop failure and thus the people and economy will suffer.

  • In such a large country like India, most of the people whose occupation iis farming, depend on agriculture for their livelihood and income.

Answer:

Over half of India's population works in agriculture, and monsoon rains directly affect their incomes and livelihood. Agriculture adds up to more than 15% of India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which means that when crops fail because of too little rain, the economy suffers.India is self-sufficient in rice and wheat, but a drought would increases imports of pulses and edible oils, such as palm oil, soyoil and sunflower oil. Monsoon rains replenish reservoirs and groundwater, allowing better irrigation and more hydropower output.
