Answer:
The air which we breathe in and out of the lungs varies in its pressure. So basically when there is a fall in air pressure the alveolar spaces falls and the air enters the lungs (inspiration) and as the pressure of the alveoli within exceeds the atmospheric pressure, the air is blown from the lungs (expiration). The flow rate of air is in proportion to the magnitude of the pressure difference.
➡The breathing mechanism involves two processes:
✏Inspiration
✏Expiration

Breathing involves two stages
a) inspiration
b) expiration
inspiration - during which atmospheric air drawn in
expiration- during which alveolar air is released out
the movement of air into and out of lung is carried out by creating a pressure gradient between the lung and the atmosphere
inspiration can occur if the pressure within lungs is less then atmospheric pressure that is there is negative pressure gradient inside lungs with respect to atm pressure
expiration occur when pressure in lung is higher than atmospheric pressure
diaphragm, external and internal intercostal muscles, rib cage etc help in breathing by changing pressure gradient inside lungs
