According to Newton’s third law, when one object exerts a force on another, the latter body exerts the same force in the opposite direction on the first. Try to push someone. You can feel the force that person exerts on you.

If both forces are in opposite directions, why don’t they cancel? This is because they act on different bodies. The first you apply the the other person causes them to accelerate forward, and the force they exert on you accelerates you backward.

The same thing happens with your example: the spring scale exerts a force on the mass, and the mass exerts the same force back on the spring: 20Nt
