Answer:

The term Meiosis was introduced by JB farme and Moore in 1905 . Meiosis is the process of cell division in which the number of chromosome is halved in new cells than that of mother cells. It occurs in the reproductive organs - the gonads ( testes or ovaries ) . The cells of the testes divides to form sperms and those of the ovary divide to form eggs . The sperm and egg fuse together to form a single cell called Zygote . The process of fusion of the sperm and egg is called fertilization. When a cell divides by meiosis, it produces four new cells instead of just two . The new cells have half the number of chromosomes than that of mother cells .

significance of Meiosis

  • It produces gametes for reproduction .
  • It helps maintain chromosome number in the gametes .

Explanation:

I have also provided the figure of Meiosis .

Meiosis is a process where a single cell divides twice to produce four cells containing half the original amount of genetic information. These cells are our sex cells – sperm in males, eggs in females. ... These four daughter cells only have half the number of chromosomes? of the parent cell – they are haploid.
