Couple :-
- A couple is defined as two equal and opposite forces which act in a different line and contributes to rotation of the body in a certain direction.
- The turning effect, or moment of a couple, is calculated by multiplying the size of one of the force (F) by the perpendicular distance between the two forces (s).
Examples :-
- The steering wheel of a vehicle when someone is driving
- The action of screwdriver
- The forces exerted by the tip of a screwdriver on the head of a screw
- Drag forces acting on a spinning propeller
- The reaction control system on a spacecraft
Formula to calculate couple :
◘ Couple = F × l
Where,
→ l is perpendicular distance between forces.
For couple,
- The units are that of Nm
- Dimensions are -
