Couple :-

  • A couple is defined as two equal and opposite forces which act in a different line and contributes to rotation of the body in a certain direction.
  • The turning effect, or moment of a couple, is calculated by multiplying the size of one of the force (F) by the perpendicular distance between the two forces (s).

Examples :-

  • The steering wheel of a vehicle when someone is driving
  • The action of screwdriver
  • The forces exerted by the tip of a screwdriver on the head of a screw
  • Drag forces acting on a spinning propeller
  • The reaction control system on a spacecraft

Formula to calculate couple :

◘ Couple = F × l

Where,

→ l is perpendicular distance between forces.

For couple,

  • The units are that of Nm
  • Dimensions are -

\mathbf{[(M^1LT^{-2})(L)]=[M^1L^2T^{-2}]}
