Given that:

  • A man is standing at a level of 10 m above the water.

  • Angle of elevation of elevation of the top of hill is 60° .

  • Angle of depression of the foot of hill is 30° .

To Find:

  • Distance of hill from the ship and height of the hill.

Formula used:

  • tan30° = 1/√3

  • tan60° = √3

Solution:

Let the distance of the ship from the hill be x.

So, tan30° = 10/x

x = 10 3 m....(1)

Now, Let the original height of the ship be h.

So, Again Using the above formula, we have

tan60° = (h-10)/x

3 = (h-10)/103

30 = h - 10

h = 40 m.

So, height of the hill is 40 m and distance of the ship from base is 10√3 m.
