SENTENCE: A sentence is the largest unit of any language. In English, it begins with a capital letter and ends with a full-stop, or a question mark, or an exclamation mark.The sentence is generally defined as a word or a group of words that expresses a thorough idea by giving a statement/order, or asking a question, or exclaiming.

There are 4 types of sentences listed below:-

  •  \large \mathtt \color{purple} { DECLARATIVE\:SENTENCE}

This type of structure helps in making statements and stating basic information. You can also express an opinion using them. Put full stop ending this type of the sentence.For example;students failed to complete their essays on time.

  •  \large \mathtt \color{red} {  IMPERATIVE \:SENTENCE}

You use it when giving demand or instruction. it this in some cases an exclamation mark might be used. This can either be negative or positive depending on a message.EXAMPLE; Do not stop!

  •  \large \mathtt \color{lime} { EXCLAMERTY\:SENTENCE}

You use an exclamatory type to express deep emotions or feelings. It can either be disbelief or happiness, and it must be finished with an exclamation point. Rarely you need to use this type in formal and highly objective writings.For Example got an A in my research paper!

  •  \large \mathtt \color{pink} { INTERROGATIVE \:SENTENCE}

These type of sentences are used to put question and state question. These question mostly wnd with question mark.

Defining a Sentence:

  • A group of words arranged in such a way which makes a complete seense is called a sentence

Kinds of Sentences

There are four kinds of Sentences.

  1. Assertive (or Declarative) Sentence
  2. Interrogative Sentence
  3. Imperative Sentence
  4. Exclamatory Sentence

Assertive (or Declarative) Sentence

A sentence that makes a statement or an assertion is called a Assertive or Declarative sentence

  • An Assertive Sentence states facts, describes things or reports events in an affirmative Sentence(positive) way or a negative way. In other words, a sentence of this kind can either be Affirmative or Negative.

Examples-

The earth moves round the sun. (Affirmative)

Don't laugh at the beggar. ( Negative )

  • We use a Full stop ( . ) at the end of an assertive sentence

Interrogative Sentence (Question)

A sentence that asks a question is called an Interrogative Sentence

Examples-

a. Who is your father?

b. Why did you laugh at him?

  • We use a Mark of Interrogation (?) at the end of an Interrogative Sentence.

Imperative Sentence (Command)

A sentence that expresses a request, an order (or command), an advice or an instruction is called an Imperative Sentence

Examples,

a.Please tell me the way to the airport. (request)

b. Close the door. (order)

  • An Imperative Sentence also ends with a Full Stop ( . ).

Exclamatory sentence

A sentence that expresses a strong or sudden feeling such as joy, sorrow, surprise, wonder, etc. is called an Exclamatory Sentence

Examples-

a. Hurrah! We have won the match.(joy)

b. Alas! He is no more,(sorrow)

  • We use a Mark of Exclamation (!) at the end of an Exclamatory Sentence.
