Given :

  • Sanket purchased a rectangular plot having area 200 m².

  • Length of the plot was 10 m more than its breadth

To find :

  • Length and the breadth of the plot .

Hint :

  • Let the breadth of the plot be x metre .

Solution :

Length = ( x + 10 ) metre .

Area of rectangle = length x breadth .

200 = (x + 10) x

200 = x² + 10 x

That is x² + 10x = 200

x² + 10x - 200 = 0

Now, solving equation x² + 10x - 200 = 0 .

According to the question,

area of the rectangular plot = 200 sqm.

⟼i.e. L x B = 200 sqm.

As per condition, L = B + 10.

Putting the value of L we get,

(B + 10) x B = 200 sqm.

or, B²+10B = 200

or, B²+10B - 200 = 0

or, B²+10B + 20B - 10B - 200 = 0

or, B(B + 20) - 10(B + 20) = 0.

or, (B - 10) (B + 20) = 0

Since breadth cannot be negative so, B = 10m.

Therefore,

L = B + 10 = 10 + 10 = 20m (Ans)
