HOW DOES THE TENDENCY OF THE ELEMENTS TO LOSE ELECTRONS CHANGE BIN MODERN PERIODIC TABLE IN A
1)GROUP
2)PERIOD

WHY?

1. FOR A GROUP

all elements of a group have same valence electrons in last orbit and thus have the same valancy.

however while going down a group through the balance electrons remain the same but a new shell is added.this is the periodic trend while going down a group.now as a new shell is added the atomic radius increases due to which it becomes easier for an atom to loose electron. and hence the TENDENCY TO LOOSE ELECTRONS INCREASES

2.FOR A PERIOD ,

the number of period indicates the number of shell . all elements in same period has same number of shell. however while going from left to right the electron is added to the same shell. due to this the nuclear charge increases and size of atom decreases . and thus the TENDENCY TO LOOSE A ELECTRON DECREASES
