Let x and y be the ages of both friends respectively

Ages of them four years ago =x-4 and y-4 resp.

Product of their ages 4 yrs ago=

(x-4)(y-4)=xy-4x-4y+16

But product=48

xy-4x-4y+16=48

xy-4(x-y)=32------1

Sum of present ages=x+y=20

x=20-y---------2

Substitution of 1 in 2,

(20-y)(y)-4(20-y-y)=32

20y-y^2-80-8y=32

12y-y^2-48=0

y^2-12y+48=0---(multiplying by-1)
