Oxygen is the chemical element with the symbol O and atomic number 8. It is a member of the chalcogen group in the periodic table, a highly reactive nonmetal, and an oxidizing agent that readily forms oxides with most elements as well as with other compounds.
A chemical element that constitutes 21 percent of the Earth's atmosphere, that is capable of combining with all elements except some noble gases, that is active in physiological processes of almost all known organisms, and that is involved especially in combustion — see Chemical Elements Table.Under standard conditions oxygen forms a gas that is composed of molecules consisting of two oxygen atoms (O2). This is called a diatomic gas. In this form oxygen is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas. Oxygen also exists as the allotrope ozone (O3).
