The Chipko movement. In the 1970s, an organized resistance to the destruction of forests spread throughout India and came to be known as the Chipko movement. The name of the movement comes from the word 'embrace', as the villagers hugged the trees, and prevented the contractors' from felling them

THIS ACT IS MAINLY DONE THROUGH THE ACT TREES TO PROTECT THEM FROM BEING CUT DOWN .IT FIRST BEGAN IN APRIL 1973.THE WORD CHIPKO MEANS "TO STICK" OR "TO HUG".THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THIS MOVEMENT WAS TO ENSURE AN ECOLOGICAL BALANCE AND THE SURVIVAL OF THE TRIBAL PEOPLE WHOSE ACTIVITIES REVOLVED AROUND THIS VILLAGE.
