x {}^{2}  +  \frac{1}{x {}^{2} }  = 146 \\  \\ squaring \:  \: both \:  \: + sides \\  \\ (x {}^{2}  +  \frac{1}{x {}^{2} } ) {}^{2}  = (12) {}^{2}  \\  \\ x {}^{4}  +  \frac{1}{x {}^{4} }  + 2 = 144 \\  \\ x {}^{4}  +  \frac{1}{x {}^{4} } = 144 - 2 \\  \\ x {}^{4}  +  \frac{1}{x {}^{4} } = 142
