Step-by-step explanation:

x + y =5 ……….(1)

2x –3y = 4 ………(2)

Multiplying equation (1) by 2, we obtain

2x + 2y = 10 ………..(3)

2x –3y = 4 ………(2)

Subtracting equation (2) from equation (3), we obtain

5y = 6

y = 6/5

Substituting the value in equation (1), we obtain

x = 5 - (6/5) = 19/5

Answer:

x + y = 5 \: \: and \:  \: 2x - 3y = 4  \\  \\ x + y = 5 \\ x = 5 - y...............(i) \\ putting \: the \: value \: of \: x \: in \: the \: equation.... \\ 2x - 3y = 4 \\ 2(5 - y) - 3y = 4 \\ 10 - 2y - 3y = 4 \\ 10 - 5y = 4 \\  - 5y = 4 - 10 \\  - 5y =  - 6 \\ 5y = 6 \\ y = \frac{6}{5}  \\ now \: substituting \: the \: value \: of \: y \: in \: eq.(i).....we \: get.... \\ x = 5 - y \\ x = 5 -  \frac{6}{5}  \\ x = \frac{19}{5}  \\  \\ hence \: the \: values \: of \: x \: and \: y \: are \:  \frac{19}{5} and \:  \frac{6}{5}
