let the number be x and (5 + 3/2 x)

therefore

x + (5 + 3/2 x) = 40

=> x + 5 + 3x/2 = 40

=> 2x + 3x = (40 - 5) x 2

=> 5x = 70

=> x = 70/5 = 14
