एक माध्यम से दूसरे माध्यम में पहुँचने तरंग की गति की दिशा में परिवर्तन हो जाता है, जिसे अपवर्तन (Refraction) कहते हैं। प्रकाश जब एक माध्यम से दूसरे माध्यम में तिरछा होकर जाता है तो तो दूसरे माध्यम से इसके संचरण की दिशा परिवर्तित हो जाती है। यह अपवर्तन कहलाता है।
