Given: M/20 Mohr's salt solution

To find: Molarity of potassium permanganate solution

Step by step explanation:

The reaction of Mohr's salt with potassium permanganate is the classical example of oxidation- reduction titration  (Redox titration) where manganese ion is reduced from +7 oxidation state( pink color) to +2(colorless) by ferrous ion.

In this reaction, Mohr's salt (ferric ammonium sulphate) plays a role of reducing agent and it itself gets oxidized from ferrous ion to ferric ion.

Procedure:

  • Prepare 100 ml of M/20 solution of Mohr's salt.
  • Pipette out 50 ml of Mohr's salt in a clean conical flask and add a few drops of Sulphuric acid.
  • Fill the burette with potassium permanganate solution of unknown concentration. Note the initial reading of burette.
  • Titrate the solution until there is permanent pale color in conical flask. Note the volume of titrant consumed.

Calculations:

M_{1}V_{1} = M_{2} V_{2}

Volume of potassium permanganate: V1 (final reading in burette)

Concentration of potassium permanganate: M1

Volume of Mohr's salt: V2= 50 ml

Concentration of Mohr's salt: M2=0.05 M
