Answer:

Thar is a desert area because it receives scanty rainfall from the South West monsoon winds in India. The Aravalli Range of mountains run parallel to the thar and thus is responsible for scanty rainfall.

Answer:

Thar desert:-

  • To the North-west of India, covering the whole of western Rajasthan,  northern Gujarat and a small portion of Punjab and Haryana, lie an extensive arid region called the Thar Desert or The Great Indian desert, which extends into Pakistan. The desert lies to the west of the Aravalis.
  • Rainfall is meagre and erratic in the region and below 20-25 cm in some parts. Since the Aravali Range runs parallel to the desert, it is not able to trap the moisture-laden winds for the region.
  • It has a very few seasonal rivers or stream which appear only during the monsoons. It is an area of inland drainage. The only important large river is Luni. Sambhar is an saltwater lake. Indira Gandhi Canal has been developed here to irrigate the fields.
