अभिक्रिया की दर (reaction rate या rate of reaction) का मतलब यह है कि किसी दी हुई रासायनिक अभिक्रिया में किसी अभिकारक या उत्पाद की मात्रा कितना धीमे या कितनी तेजी से बदल रही है। भौतिक रसायन के अन्तर्गत रासायनिक गतिकी (Chemical kinetics) में अभिक्रिया की दर का अध्ययन किया जाता है।

Rate-determining step:

  • It is defined as the slowest step of a chemical reaction that determines the speed (rate) at which the overall reaction proceeds.

  • It is determined by the slowest step and it is also known as rate limiting step.

  • Chemical reactions can be occur in various steps but the slowest one determine the rate of the reaction.

  • The step which has highest activation energy corresponds to the slowest step or rate determining step.

  • eg - Reaction between NO and H2 leads to three steps i.e

NO + NO —> N2O2 (fast)

N2O2 + H2 —> N2O + H2O (slow)

  • In this , the second step is rate determining step , it is shown by equilibrium sign.
