Answer:

What seems absurd to the author was the fact that he never believed his grandmother when she revealed to him about the games she played in her childhood days.

He didn’t believe all the three stories she shared about her youthful days. All the stories shared by his grandmother were completely absurd to him because he considered her grandmother words as feeble.

The very  thought that his grandmother was young and beautiful someday with a handsome husband  seemed absurd to the author Khushwant Singh.

Explanation:

  • In the autobiographical excerpt, ' The Portrait of a Lady', the famous Indian English writer Khushwant Singh gives a vivid account of his grandmother.
  • In the excerpt, Singh draws a pen-portrait of his grandmother as he had seen her since his childhood.
  • For Singh, his grandmother was a picture of sterness, discipline and love.
  • Highly religious, an avid animal lover, downright rural in attitude, Singh's grandmother was a typical representation of the aged Sikh rural women.
  • With a heavily wrinkled face and greying hair, Singh always conceptualised her as an old lady.
  • When Grandmother narrated stories of her youth, when she was young and beautiful, with Singh's grandfather as a handsome young man that seemed quite absurd to the author,
  • He could not conceptualise his grandmother being young, without wrinkles, without her serene nature.
