Yes , they were independent of Mauryas .

In the history of India (The Midival Period) , there is no evidence showing the defeat , anyway of Fight among them .

The were doing their own jobs.... I mean they were rulling their own kingdoms .

The Tamil kings were peace lovers from a long period of time .

They prefer treaty over war .

That's why we we can't say that they were Thier slaves.

Thus , it is sure that they were independent .

Mauryan empire was established by Chandragupta Maurya at Takshasila in 323 BCE. Chandragupta seized the kingdom from Dhana Nanda with the help of Chanakya, for the personal vengeance of the latter. Chandragupta captured the lost territories of North west India and extended his kingdom to the east until Kosi hills.
