As India has become a global player, it has to play an active part in resolving global issues as well. Since climate change is a serious issue that developed nations are trying to handle, India too has to address climate change issues while formulating any policies, both domestic and foreign.

The main objective of any nation is to progress by strengthening its economy and improving the quality of life of the citizens and hence making a place for itself in the international community. So, anything that gets in the way of the economy or makes the lives of citizens difficult, cannot be part of a progressive policy.

Climate control is important because it can affect a nation both positively and negatively. Here are a few reasons why climate control is important for India’s foreign policy:

1.    If India chooses to ignore climate change resolutions as set by other nations like USA and China, India will find itself left out. That in itself can damage India’s image of being a world power.

2.    Given the population of India and its energy needs, it is obvious that fossil fuels will not help for long. It is important to identify and then shift to other sources of energy. This is in fact, a part of climate change control programme, whereby, nations are required to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels and thus reduce emissions. Additionally, it also works out  cheaper than traditionally used fuels. As can be seen, domestic issues are in fact being resolved because of climate control.

It goes without saying that no nation would like to invest in a nation that has energy crisis. If India wants foreign investment, it has to manage the energy issues. Climate change thus is important both for the domestic as well as foreign policy of a nation.

3.     India can improve its image of being a poor nation, by executing climate change missions, to benefit the poor. The Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) aims at providing electricity to the poor in remote villages through solar energy. Such initiatives improve the infrastructure and attract investment from other nations.

4.    India being an agricultural nation, the financial situation of the nation depends a lot on this sector. India is a big exporter of rice, sugar, wheat and cotton. So, India needs to improve the workings of the agricultural sector so that losses can be minimized, while profits can be increased and more employment can be generated. In order to do so, the National Water Mission is focusing on how to reduce the wastage and promote the conservation of water. This again, falls under climate change management.

Thus, climate change is related to poverty, economy and hence the overall development of the nation. There are many reasons why climate control is important for India’s foreign policy, but the bottom line is that going with climate change guidelines is extremely beneficial to everyone, right from the common man, to the Indian farmer, to policy makers and the nation as a whole.
