The thiophene seems to have just four π  electrons in a butadiene system, an sp3 hybridised Sulphur atom with two electron pairs. If the sulphur atom re-hybridizes to sp2, however, it will have an electron pair in a 3p orbital that can overlap with the carbon 2p orbitals on either side.
