Answer:

First of all Velocity is a vector quantity, so I am assuming that you are familiar with the concept of Vector quantities.

Now coming to the definition

It is defined as the displacement made by an object/body in a given amount of time.

Velocity is of 2 types

i) Average velocity

This is the velocity which we all are familiar with and it is calculated mathematically by the formula

Avg. Velocity =Total displacement /Total time taken

ii) Instantaneous velocity

This is velocity which we generally use in measuring fastness of a body in a very small amount of time.

It is given by the mathematical formula

Instantaneous velocity = d/dt(Avg. Velocity) or instantaneous displacement /time taken.

Now since velocity is a vector quantity it has direction and magnitude

It can be of two types

1)Positive

2) Negative

The SI unit of velocity is same as that of speed i.e. metre/seconds

To sum up in layman's language it is basically speed with a direction.
