Given:

Number of observations of data, n = 20

A.M. or Arithmetic mean of 20 data, m₁ =  89.4

Later data 78 is replaced by 87.

Find:

The A.M. of the data after replacement.

Solution:

Formula for arithmetic mean is given by,

Arithmetic mean = Sum of observations/Number of observations

Let sum of observations be X.

Now,

m₁ = X/n

X = m₁n

X = (89.4)(20)

X = 1788

Sum of 20 observations of the given data, X = 1788

Later, 78 is replaced by 87.

It means that New sum of 20 observations, Xₙ = 1788 - 78 + 87

                                                                             = 1797

∴ New arithmetic mean, A.M. = 1797/20

                                                 = 89.85

Hence, the A. M of the data after the replacement is 89.85.
