Explanation:

absolute refractive index of a medium is the ratio of speed of light in vaccum to the speed of light in a medium

mew= c1/c2

as there is no such medium found in which the speed of light is greater than speed in vaccum i.e 3×10^8 so refractive index of most materials is greater than 1.
