Refractive index of glass= speed in air /speed in glass
Speed in air/speed in glass
Let speed in glass be x , then
1.5=speed in air / x
Now , x=speed in air /1.5
Similarly, let speed in water be y, then
Y=speed in air /1.3
On dividing xand y ,we get
x/y= speed in air /1.5
/
Speed in air /1.3

Answer:

The refractive index of glass with respect to water is 1.15 .

Step-by-step explanation:

Refractive Index :

  • The refractive index of a medium for light of given wavelength may be defined as the ratio of speed of light in vacuum to its speed in that medium.

μ = \frac{c}{v}

Absolute Refractive Index :

  • Refractive index of medium with respect to vacuum is called absolute refractive index.

Relative Refractive Index :

  • The relative refractive index of medium 2 with respect to medium 1 is defined as the ratio of speed of light in medium 1 (v1) to the speed of light in medium 2 (v2) and is denoted by

₁ μ₂ = \frac{v1}{v2}

Given that :

  • Absolute refractive index of glass μ₂ = 1.5
  • Absolute refractive index of water μ₁= 1.3

To find :

  • Refractive index of glass with respect to water

Solution :

  • Absolute refractive index of water is

μ₁ = \frac{c}{v1}

  • Absolute refractive index of glass is

μ₂= \frac{c}{v2}

  • Refractive index of glass with respect to water is

₁ μ₂ = \frac{v1}{v2} = \frac{c}{v2} \times \frac{v1}{c} \\ ₁ μ₂ = \frac{μ₂}{μ₁} \\ ₁ μ₂ = \frac{1.5}{1.3} \\ ₁ μ₂ = 1.15

  • Hence, refractive index of glass with respect to water is 1.15 .
