The acceleration due to gravity on the surface of moon is 1.7 m/sec2. What is the time period of a simple pendulum on the moon if its time period is 3.5 sec on earth?

Let T1 and T2 are the time periods of the pendulums on the earth and moon respectively.Similarly if corresponding accelerations due to gravity are g1 and g2 then for a simple pendulum of length l, we have

T1=2π√(l/g1) and

T2=2π√(l/g2)

This gives

T1/T2=√(g2/g1)

Or

T2=T1√(g1/g2)

Putting the values of different quantities we get time period on moon as

T2=3.5√(9.8/1.7)

=8.4 s
