Given : The ace leg spinner Bhayanak singh bedi had 1200 runs taken of him in a certain number of matches. In the next match he took 4 wickets conceding 144 runs as a result of which his average (runs conceded / no. of wickets taken) increased by 1

To find : How many wickets did he take before ths last match

Solution:

The ace leg spinner Bhayanak singh bedi had 1200 runs taken of him in a certain number of matches

Let say wicket taken till that match  = W

hence Average (runs conceded / no. of wickets taken) = 1200/W

in the next match he took 4 wickets conceding 144 runs as a result of which his average increased by 1

=> (1200 + 144) / ( W + 4)  =  1200/W  + 1

=> 1344/(W + 4)  = (1200 + W)/W

=> 1344W = (1200 + W)(W + 4)

=> 1344W = 4800 + 1204W + W²

=> W²  - 140W + 4800 = 0

=> W²  - 80W  - 60W + 4800 = 0

=> (W - 80)(W - 60) = 0

=> W = 80 or 60

He had taken 60 or 80  wickets   before the  last match
