It is based on the fact that in a democracy everyone should get equal opportunities. If there are no reservations, these people will not be able to represent themselves in politics as they lack the influence to become leaders. Other people may exploit these people if they are under represented. Though it seems to be against democracy to provide privileges to some groups, it works well in the long run.
