Given :   Adjoining figure shows two boxes

Box  1 :  60 cm * 70 cm * 50 cm

Box 2 : 60 cm * 60 cm * 60 cm

To Find : which box requires more material to make

Solution:

Assuming boxes are solid :

Then material required = volume of box

Box  1 :  60 cm * 70 cm * 50 cm

Volume = 60 * 70  * 50  = 210000  cm³

Box  2 :  60 cm * 60 cm * 60 cm

Volume = 60 * 60  * 60  = 216000  cm³

216000  > 210000

Hence Volume of Box  > Volume of Box 1

=> Material required for Box 2 is more than for Box 1

Material required for Box  60 cm * 60 cm * 60 cm  is more than for Box  60 cm * 70 cm * 50 cm

if empty box are made then surface area to be find

Surface area = 2(lb + bh + lh)

Box  1 :  60 cm * 70 cm * 50 cm   = 2(60 * 70 + 60 *50 + 50*70) = 2(4200 + 3000 + 3500) = 2*10700 = 21400 cm²

Box 2 : 60 cm * 60 cm * 60 cm  = 2( 60 * 60 + 60 *60 + 60*60) = 2(3600 + 3600 + 3600) = 2*10800 = 21600 cm²

Box  60 cm * 70 cm * 50 cm required less material  in this case
