Given :  378 chairs for arranging in the auditorium.

chairs are to be arranged in rectangular manner

(number of rows × number of columns).

To Find: If number of columns is 18, how many rows will be there?

if arranged in square how many chairs will be left out or how many more chairs be needed

Solution:

Total Number of chairs =  number of rows × number of columns

Total Number of chairs = 378

Number of columns = 18

=> 378 =  number of rows × 18

=> 21  =  number of rows

Hence number of rows will be 21

Arranged in square

           19

     1    378

           1

          ____

  29    278

          261

        ____

             17

378 = 19 * 19  + 17

17 Chairs will be left out  and  19 chairs will be in each row and column

or 20 * 20  - 378  = 22 chairs will be needed  more
