The present age of the boy is 12 years and the present age of his brother is 6 years.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the present age of the boy = x

Let the present age of his brother = y

According to the given information the age of a boy is double the age of his brother.

x = 2y --------(1)

After 4 years the age of the boy = (x + 4) years

After 4 years the age of his brother = (y + 4) years

the product of their will be 160.

(x + 4) (y + 4) = 160 -----------(2)

xy + 4x + xy + 16 = 160

2y² + 8y + 4y + 16 - 160 = 0

2y² + 12y - 144 = 0

y² + 6y - 72 = 0

y (y+12) -6 (y+12) = 0

(y-6) (y+12) = 0

y = 6

according to equation (1) x = 2y

x = 2(6) = 12

The present age of the boy is 12 years and the present age of his brother is 6 years.
