The age of a man 3 times the age his son-

Let the man's age be 3x years

After 5 years the man's age will be double the age of his son-

⇒ 3x + 5 = 2(x + 5)

⇒ 3x + 5 = 2x + 10

⇒ x = 15 years

Hence, the present age of the man is 15 years.

Solution

Let the present age of the son be ⇒ x

Let the present age of the man be ⇒ 3x

(This is 3x since the age of the son is x and in the question the present age of the man is said to be thrice the age of this son. So his age becomes 3 × x = 3x)

Age of son after 5 years ⇒ 5 + x

Age of man after 5 years ⇒ 5 + 3x

To find the present age of the man we must find the present age of the son. To do so we'll solve this equation ⇒ 3x+5=2(x+5)

Let's solve your equation step-by-step.

3x+5=2(x+5)

Step 1: Simplify both sides of the equation.

3x+5=2(x+5)

(Distribute)

3x+5=(2)(x)+(2)(5)

3x+5=2x+10

Step 2: Subtract 2x from both sides.

3x+5-2x=2x+10-2x

x+5=10

Step 3: Subtract 5 from both sides.

x+5-5=10-5

x=5

The present age of the son is ⇒ x ⇒ 5

The present age of the man is ⇒ 3x ⇒ 3 × 5 ⇒ 15

∴ The present age of the man is 15 years.
