. The age of a man and his son today if the son was one-seventh his father's age five years ago and will be only one-third the father's age five years from now. You need to solve the equations. (a) x + 7y = 30 & x – 3y = 10 (b) x - 3y = 35 & x + 3y = -10 (c) -x + 7y = 30 & x - 3y = 10 (d) x - 7y = 30 & x - 3y = 10

Answer:

Let the age of Father be x and that of Son be y.

Given that 5 years ago, the age of Father was 7 times the age of Son

Therefore,

x-5 = 7( y-5)

x= 7y- 35 +5

x =7y -30 (1)

Similarly given that after 5 years the age of Father will be 3 times the age of Son

Therefore,

x+5 =3( y+5)

x =3y +15–5

x =3y+10 (2)

Substituting the valuel of x in the 1st eqn. we get

3y+ 10 =7y-30

3y-7y =-30–10

-4y =-40

y = 10

Age of Son=10

Substituting the value of y in 1st or 2nd eqn. we get the the value of x

ie ,x=7× 10–30

=70–30 =40.

Age of Father=40.
